Developer’s Description

Cascading Slides is an award-winning photo album, media browser, slideshow and file encryption application (full version only) all in one. The full version is free to try for 30 days, but the free version is still a better alternative to the photo browser and slideshow that comes with Windows

Cascading Slides is a free photo album and media browser. The application allows you to add your photos and create as many albums as you want. Then you can use your mouse or keyboard to browse through your photos. You can view them in their original size or in full-screen mode. There is even a slideshow feature that you can access by simply clicking the play button on the top toolbar.

Adding images to the application and creating albums is really easy. All you have to do is tell Cascading Slides where your images are. You can add captions to each image.

There is one particular feature that is very interesting to me: encryption. When I added my first few pictures, the application asked me whether I wanted to encrypt them or not. By encrypting your images Cascading Slides will password-protect them and erase the original photos from your hard drive. This prevents another user from accessing the source files. But you have to be careful not to forget the password that you assigned to them. Luckily, the app lets you add a password security question that will help you remind it.

In my testing I added a few high-resolution images into a new album and encrypted them. I didn’t experience any slow-downs while browsing my pictures, even at full screen.

There are only two negative things about this app. First, the user interface looks old, even the folder browser looks like something out of Windows 95. Second, there aren’t any sharing options. Most similar apps let you post to Facebook or Flickr or even e-mail photos straight from the album view.

A vacation does not end when you close the door on your home right after you come back. Sure enough you have an abundance of photos on your camera to remind you of both good and bad times. You can easily view them with what Windows puts at your disposal by default, or use advanced and enhanced viewers, such as Cascading Slides.

Pick a default media directory

The application takes little time to install. However, before getting to take it for a spin to see what it’s all about, you might want to check if your computer is equipped with Java Runtime Environment for proper functionality.

Running it for the first time asks you to specify a folder you generally use to deposit pictures and clips. Default Windows multimedia locations are selected, with options to remove them or add new ones. Sadly, you can only return to this menu by running the application again, with no link from the main window. It’s also the only way to manage library content.

Make the interface suit your style

The interface is pretty polished, with a transparent look and feel. Visual settings are fully customizable, so you can directly switch to other themes or simply change the color itself and transparency level. Additional options refer to text and the way it appears and whether or not to include specific file details.

You don’t get to use any editing features whatsoever, unless you configure them, that is. Accessing the options menu reveals that the application lets you set up quick access links to external editors for videos and images if you consider they need tweaking.

No implemented editing options

When you’re happy with the way it all looks, hitting the spacebar on your keyboard triggers a slideshow of all pictures in your library. Remember to check the timer, with the default value being set to ten seconds.

Moreover, you can bring the view on the whole screen and just enjoy. Captions help you add messages or descriptions. What’s missing are transitions, with a simple fade in/out being all to it and no option to change or add.

A few last words

In conclusion, Cascading Slides promises just a little more that it has to offer. Practicality is not completely lost in development, but some tweaks are more than helpful, with significant resources used for a simple viewer and not even a few different transitions. On the other way, its a quick and fun way to relax viewing past memories.

Cascading Slides is a Java media browser and slideshow application that makes viewing large collections of pictures and videos a breeze. You can tag folder favorites, add image captions, and even password encrypt your files (full version only). The app is fully customizable, and with full keyboard support, it’s also user friendly.
